"Fashion fades, STYLE is eternal" ~ CoCo Chanel! I have always, always loved this quote because I believe it's so true! Fashion/Trends are so temprorary meaning what the world presumes as "hot" can easily be changed by tomorrow. If you look around at the different trends some of us may seek to hold on to, you see the majority of them are not even relevant right now. The importance of having style, more specifically a personal style, is everlasting. Your style embodies who you are! It's the mark you leave wherever you may go. Some of our favorite celebs are loved mainly because of their personal style. Whether you like to take risks or play it safe, finding your personal style is essential to depicting how you want to be seen in the world.
For some, you have your personal style nailed down. When you go to the store, you know exactly what you're looking for and the message you're looking to send to others. For others, it may be a struggle. You constantly seek social media and blogs looking to find that specific style which stands out..the one you can imagine yourself in. It's okay if that's you because today, I'm going to give you a few key tips in finding your personal style.
1. What's Your Message
Clothes speak volumes! Let's be honest, you look at what a person is wearing majority of the time before you even listen to what they have to say. The way you dress speaks a ton about you and your place in life. Rihanna's brand of being a rebel displays in the clothing she wears. Her style is so unpredictable just like her music, the things she says, etc. Her ever-changing style truthfully depicts who she is! Honestly, if you see a person wearing a multitude of higher priced items, you automatically assume the person is wealthy. If you see a person wearing outdated, baggy clothing, you assume that person is not as financially competitive. This can be extremely untrue for both parties but the way they were dressed allowed for you to make these assumptions. When searching to define your personal style, think about what message you want to convey to others. Do you convey a chic, classic timeless message? Do you want to convey a clean, simplistic, effortless message? Do you want to send a glamorous, well put together message? Or a fun, adventurous message? You Decide!
2. Pictures, Pictures, Pictures
I live by taking pictures of styles you just can't keep your eyes off of. These are styles you may have found via Tumblr, Instagram, from magazines, etc. Having a gallery of outfit related photos will help you to narrow down the pieces you absolutely love which will help you to begin to piece together your personal style. I have so many photos of looks I'm inspired by as well looks I want to re-create. These pictures allow for me to piece together different aspects of clothing items I like making one complete look pertaining to my personal style.
3. Try it Out
Don't be afraid to play around with different looks. If you want to try new hair color, a new cut, etc., don't be afraid to try it! Trial and Error is the most important key in discovering your personal style. In order for you to define it, you must try different things. In defining my own personal style, I played around with a lot of different looks. I gained inspiration from everyday people as well as celebrities. Some looks worked for me and some didn't. I'm more of a neutral girl. Although I do like adding color from time to time, I mostly like sticking to more neutral colors! They make me feel so clean, so chic and put together. I have tried the colorful style but realized it wasn't for me but I would've never known that had I not tried them out. You will never know your personal style if you don't try things out and play around with different looks, patterns, colors, etc. Don't be afraid to thrift as well as shop bargains to re-create the styles you love! Just because the look you have screenshot and/or viewed cost a lot, doesn't mean you have to pay that price or follow it to the detail!
4. DO YOU
Last but not least, TAKE RISKS!!! Don't be so wrapped into trends and what people deem as fashionable and not fashionable! DO YOU BOO! Whatever makes you happy, DO IT! If you want to wear stripes, polka dots and stars, DO IT! As long as you're confident in whatever you wearing, that's all that matters! Don't be defined by what people say is trendy or NOT! DO YOU because when you're confident in what you're wearing, your style will transcend any trend that is hot at the moment!
A few beautiful ladies I gain fashion inspiration from are: Rihanna, Zendaya, Kahlana Barfield, Kiidiosa, IShateria, Shirley B. Eniang, June Ambrose, Solange, Karla Deras and the list goes on! All these ladies inspire me for different reasons. From their originality to how the garments fall on their body, I love the confidence each of them possess in their clothing! Style is what you make it! Have fun with it! Do what makes you happy and never forget to wear whatever you choose with CONFIDENCE!
