CAUTION...Curves Ahead!

I love clothes and because I'm a more curvy woman, I tend to lean more towards things that are fitted. Fitted skirts, fitted tops, fitted pants, I just love wearing things which accentuate my curves rather than hide them. Although I do love all things fitted, I just couldn't imagine living without pencil skirts and the way they tend to hug every curve of my lower body. As curvy women, we are forced to believe we can't rock a pencil skirt and that's not true. You can rock whatever you want, you may just have to bend the rules a bit! If you're self-conscious about the trend, I have a few options that will allow for you to feel more comfortable in the piece.

1. Pair Patterned Skirts with a Solid Top

I love patterned skirts but they can be a bit intimidating if your hips are a little wider. I don't suggest you giving up the patterned skirts because there's so many to choose from. My favorite thing to pair with this is a solid top. Adding a solid top balances out the skirt toning down the hypnotizing fabrics and makes it more suitable for the hip area. Don't be afraid of patterns because they can definitely work if you pair it with the right top.

2. Avoid Horizontal Stripes and Embrace Vertical Stripes

I don't know if anyone told you ladies but horizontal stripes are not the friend of someone who has wider hips. The horizontal stripes actually makes your wider, making you look and feel bigger than you actually are. Vertical stripes elongate you giving the allusion of a slimmer more toned you, taking attention away from your hips, adding it to the length of your legs. Now I'm not saying you can't wear horizontally striped skirts, just make sure you wear ones that have more thinner stripes to avoid the widening of the frame.

3. Choose Pencil Skirts with Slimming Add-Ins

With pencil skirts being all the craze for so many women, they're now making more and more with an actual tummy and hip slimmers meaning they are made from a controlled fabric in those areas.  They suck and tuck everything which in the end makes the hips look slimmer. When I'm bloated or just not in the best mood, tummy-wise, I always opt for more skirts with this option. They provide a great fit, a controlled look and believe it or not, they're amazingly comfortable. I purchase majority of my skirts with this option at H&M. "shoprateddR" which debuts later this year will also have this slimming option. :-)

4. Opt for Darker Pencil Skirts

Opting for darker colors offers a more slimming allusion. We're not trying to erase the hips, we just want them to look as flattering as possible. Darker colors such as black, hunter green and navy blue doesn't make the hips look so wide and in turn makes you feel extremely comfortable in the pencil skirt. My favorite color in the whole wide world is BLACK so I love pairing my black pencil skirts with a variety of different cropped and fitted tops! It slims my hips and gives me that fitted, polished look I love!
